Armenia’s education ministry says it ended Aghbyur camp contract

The ministry says it paid organiser Lava Aghbyur nothing and disciplined two employees after an inquiry into conditions at the children’s camp in Tsaghkadzor.

Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports said in a written response to Azatutyun that it had unilaterally terminated its contract with Lava Aghbyur, the company organising the Aghbyur children’s camp in Tsaghkadzor, and paid it no funds.
The outlet reported in July that children from Yerevan and other regions were housed in dilapidated wooden cabins without hygiene supplies or hot water. Dining space was limited, and there were no facilities for leisure activities or modern play equipment. After that reporting, the children were moved to a camp with better conditions.
AMD 32.5 million had been allocated to organise the camp. That was a budget allocation, not a payment to Lava Aghbyur: the ministry says the company received no money under the contract.
The ministry said its internal investigation resulted in disciplinary action against two employees in its general education department. One received a reprimand; the other’s service was terminated. No higher-ranking officials faced disciplinary action, Azatutyun said.
The ministry declined to name the disciplined employees or release the full findings of its examination of the camp.
