Armenia has presented the Yerevan Tech for Biodiversity Monitoring Platform at the COP17 biodiversity conference in Yerevan. Environment Minister and COP17 President Hambardzum Matevosyan announced the initiative in a statement carried by Armenpress on October 27.
Matevosyan said the initiative aims to strengthen countries’ national systems for monitoring biodiversity—the variety of living things—and fill data gaps, and that effective nature-conservation decisions require reliable data and a way to assess progress.
The initiative was developed in coordination with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and under the joint leadership of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Matevosyan described satellite observations and superintelligence (SI) as technologies the initiative aims to help countries use, rather than monitoring capabilities already delivered. Funding, participating countries and an implementation timetable have not been specified.
Matevosyan called on partners to join and contribute expertise and technological capabilities to meet countries’ needs and said the cooperation should continue beyond COP17 to help deliver measurable results in nature conservation.

Environment official Voskehat Grigoryan says the Global OECM Action Hub will pool expertise to help countries apply existing conservation criteria outside protected areas.
