Chairman Artur Poghosyan says the ongoing review covers thousands of criminal proceedings and that steps have been taken to overturn decisions ending prosecutions and continue them.
Armenia’s Investigative Committee has instructed its units to review murder cases dating back to the 1990s, chairman Artur Poghosyan said. The ongoing review covers thousands of criminal proceedings.
Poghosyan said criminal prosecutions against certain individuals had previously been discontinued. Steps have been taken to overturn those decisions and continue the prosecutions, he said.
In some cases, Poghosyan said, evidence available from the outset had been enough to identify those involved, and the current work was establishing legal grounds rather than making new discoveries. The review also covers high-profile cases whose resolution the public had awaited for years, he said.
Poghosyan spoke during preliminary discussions of Armenia’s draft 2027 state budget at a joint meeting of the National Assembly’s standing committees, Armenpress said. Poghosyan was responding to Civil Contract faction MP Andranik Kocharyan, who had referred to recent breakthroughs in old murder cases and asked how the system’s effectiveness could be improved.
Poghosyan also addressed possible accountability for investigators, prosecutors and senior officials who previously worked on the cases, in connection with abuse of official powers or failure to act in an official capacity.
Two investigating judges have been appointed to examine the Israeli military’s 26 November 2024 bombing, which killed artist Ali Cherri’s parents and five other civilians.
