Civic.am reports that an additional 720 tonnes has been approved for commercial fishing in Lake Sevan during the 2026 season, following a scientific centre’s recommendation.

Armenia’s government has approved an additional 720 tonnes of commercial whitefish fishing in Lake Sevan, raising the permitted catch for the entire 2026 season from 550 to 1,270 tonnes. Civic.am, a news site close to the governing Civil Contract party, reported the decision on October 22.
The original allowance followed a recommendation by the Scientific Centre of Zoology and Hydroecology. According to the decision’s justification, reported by Civic.am, that recommendation drew on research the centre conducted in 2025 into fish and crayfish stocks in the lake and its drainage basin.
Civic.am cites the centre’s study as estimating Lake Sevan’s total whitefish stock at 4,511 tonnes as of July 2026. The centre recommended adding 720 tonnes to the commercial catch allowance.
| Allowance | Tonnes |
|---|---|
| Original seasonal limit | 550 |
| Additional allowance | 720 |
| Revised full-season limit | 1,270 |
The stock estimate measures the total whitefish in the lake, rather than the amount permitted to be caught. How that estimate translates into a sustainable catch limit remains unclear. The decision provides for a higher allowance across the 2026 fishing season, but its implementation date remains unspecified.
