Azerbaijan has approved a national strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2035 compared with 1990 levels and reach net zero by 2060, JAMnews reported on 23 October.
The 2035 target uses emissions in 1990 as its starting point, rather than today’s levels. The longer-term net-zero goal means balancing the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere with an equivalent amount removed.
The strategy includes expanding solar and wind power, developing clean transport, reducing methane leaks, improving waste recycling and restoring forests. JAMnews also reports plans for “green energy zones” in Karabakh, East Zangezur and Nakhchivan.
Approval establishes the targets and planned measures. To put the strategy into practice, Azerbaijan is seeking international funding, investment and the transfer of modern technologies, according to JAMnews.
