Brazil’s Ibovespa closed down nearly 14% on October 26
Exchange operator B3 paused Monday’s session before the cash market opened, then reopened trading through an auction. The closing loss differed from the 10% decline that normally triggers a pause.

Brazil’s benchmark stock index, the Ibovespa, closed nearly 14% lower on Monday, October 26. Fox News gave that closing decline in its October 29 report but did not give a closing index level. Trading resumed after a market-wide interruption.
Monday was the first trading session after Brazil’s presidential vote on Sunday, October 25. The nearly 14% figure describes the completed session’s loss, not the 10% decline that normally triggers an initial trading pause.
Why B3 interrupted trading before the opening
The session opened already suspended, and B3 informed the market of the 30-minute interruption at 10:04 Brasília time, InfoMoney said in its October 26 account. B3 said an indicative calculation of the Ibovespa’s opening value pointed to a decline exceeding 20% and that it acted before the cash market opened to protect participants and investors and preserve market integrity.
A circuit breaker temporarily stops trading during a sharp market decline. The percentage thresholds compare the index with the previous trading session’s closing value—not with its value when trading reopens.
| Condition | Decline from the previous close | Trading response |
|---|---|---|
| Usual first trigger | More than 10% | 30-minute suspension |
| Usual second trigger after reopening | More than 15% | One-hour suspension |
| B3’s stated condition for another interruption on Monday | 20% | Another circuit breaker |
In its response to InfoMoney on October 26, B3 did not clarify whether the 20% condition applied only to that session or represented a continuing rule change.
What the pause meant for investors
B3’s October 26 notice suspended trading for 30 minutes in cash-market assets, private-sector debt securities and options linked to shares, Brazilian depositary receipts, specified equity indices and exchange-traded funds. Investors could cancel orders that were not participating in an auction during the suspension.
B3 scheduled the affected instruments to reopen through an auction from 10:30 to 10:35. Trading subsequently resumed, and the index’s loss reached 17% during the session before its nearly 14% closing decline.
