Canada beat England 31–22 in Ottawa on 23 October in the women’s WXV Global Series, giving England consecutive international defeats for the first time since 2016. BBC Sport credits Canada captain Sophie de Goede with three tries, agreeing with the Guardian’s account but conflicting with RugbyPass’s tally of two.
Canada had beaten England 24–21 in Toronto on 16 October, ending a 41-game unbeaten run that stretched back to the 2022 Rugby World Cup final. The Ottawa result was only England’s third loss in 74 matches.
The reports agree on the final score but differ over de Goede’s individual tally. A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition’s in-goal area; a hat-trick means three tries.

BBC Sport places de Goede’s third try just after the hour mark, as the Guardian did. RugbyPass’s player ratings instead credit DaLeaka Menin with a try from a maul in the 61st minute. In a maul, teammates drive forward around the ball-carrier. The scoring attribution remains disputed between the reports.

Ireland beat South Africa 40–27 at Athlone Stadium, while Wales beat Japan 17–0 in Tokyo, sending Japan down to thirteenth in the world rankings.

RugbyPass also names Julia Omokhuale and Savannah Bauder as Canada try-scorers.
England opened with a seventh-minute try from Maddie Feaunati before Omokhuale scored after sustained pressure on England’s defence. Canada’s second try followed Zoe Harrison’s knock-on—a handling error in which the ball goes forward. Gabrielle Senft collected the bouncing ball and passed to the supporting de Goede to score. Further knock-ons and an attempt held up before the ball could be grounded prevented England from replying, leaving Canada 12–7 ahead at halftime.
England kicked a penalty at goal early in the second half, then scored through Amy Cokayne from a rolling maul. The Guardian described de Goede breaking through England’s defensive line in response. Bauder later scored for Canada, while Emma Sing added a late consolation try for England.
Canada’s WXV Global Series campaign is complete. Its next games are scheduled for the Pacific Four tournament in 2027. England’s final series match is against the United States in New Jersey on 30 October, as scheduled in the Guardian and BBC Sport reports of 24 October.
