Canada’s Prime Minister’s Office says full implementation will reduce or eliminate tariffs on over 99% of current Canadian exports to the UAE. It expects the agreement to enter into force in 2027.
Canada and the United Arab Emirates signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement on October 27. Once fully implemented, it will reduce or eliminate tariffs—taxes on imports—on over 99% of current Canadian exports to the UAE, Canada’s Prime Minister’s Office said.
The UAE is already Canada’s largest export market in the Middle East and a major buyer of Canadian motor vehicles, parts and machinery, Al Jazeera said. Two-way trade was worth 3.5 billion Canadian dollars in 2025.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to double Canada’s trade outside the US over the next decade. The agreement follows US tariffs that have affected Canada’s economy and unsuccessful efforts to reach a trade deal with the US.
The Prime Minister’s Office identified farmers growing pulse and canola crops, manufacturers of industrial machinery and power generation equipment, and the aerospace sector as groups for which it expects new market opportunities.
The office said the agreement would expand market access for Canadian goods and services in industry, agriculture, forestry, fish and seafood, environmental services and engineering. It would also address trade barriers other than tariffs and make conditions for trade and investment more predictable.
Signing the agreement does not itself put those tariff changes into effect: the commitment applies once the deal is fully implemented. The Prime Minister’s Office expects the agreement to enter into force in 2027.
The satellite operator expects access to more than twice OneWeb’s current bandwidth in return for spending in 2027–2034, with initial IRIS² services expected from 2030.
