Storms that swept through the US state of Arizona overnight on 21–22 October caused significant damage and minor injuries in Heber-Overgaard, according to the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office. BBC footage published on 22 October also shows damaging hail in Phoenix, the state capital.
Heber-Overgaard has about 3,000 residents and lies roughly 140 miles (225km) northeast of Phoenix. A tornado warning was in effect as the storm crossed the community on the night of 21 October. The Guardian reported that a possible tornado knocked trees onto homes and brought down utility poles.
Videos from Phoenix show people sheltering inside a car as hail smashes its windscreen, the BBC reported. Intense downpours left neighbourhoods covered in ice.
The BBC also reported that golf ball-sized hail damaged homes and shattered windows elsewhere in Arizona. The National Weather Service issued multiple warnings and tornado watches as the storms crossed the region; the watches were not confirmation that a tornado had occurred.
Golf ball-sized hail struck northern and central Arizona on the night of 21 October, pounding roofs, shattering windows and denting cars. Strong winds toppled trees in Flagstaff and Mesa, with some falling onto walls and carports.
A few dozen ponderosa pines more than 30 feet (9 metres) tall also fell in Coconino National Forest, northwest of Flagstaff.
Ryan Bernhart, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Flagstaff, said warm, moist air moving north was feeding storms coming off the California coast. Changing winds can make those storms rotate, creating conditions for tornadoes, he explained.
The National Weather Service said storms capable of causing hail and wind damage were moving through central Arizona early on 22 October, with some flood watches and the possibility of tornadoes.
Arizona state Representative Walt Blackman, whose district includes parts of Navajo County, said families were without power and properties had suffered significant damage. He requested a state of emergency declaration.
