Southwark Crown Court gave musician Chris Brown an eight-month prison sentence for affray and suspended it for 12 months, so he does not go to prison immediately. His vocal coach, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, received a four-month sentence, also suspended for 12 months; both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
The sentences follow their guilty pleas in July 2026 over an attack at Tape, a private members’ club in London’s Mayfair, on 19 February 2023. Affray is an offence involving unlawful violence or threats of violence that cause someone to fear for their safety. Brown denied separate charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon. Those charges were dropped; he was sentenced for affray, not for them.
The BBC’s account of the hearing said Judge Tony Baumgartner described Brown hitting music producer Abraham ‘Abe’ Diaw twice in the head with a glass bottle as plainly dangerous because it risked a more serious injury. The court heard that Diaw needed hospital treatment. A prosecutor said he was discharged with pain relief and diagnoses of a head injury and a superficial knee injury; a later MRI showed a high-grade injury to a ligament in his left knee.
Brown’s defence disputed the significance of Diaw’s injuries, saying the attack caused no fractures or broken skin. The judge described the violence as serious, though not planned.
Prosecutors said Akinlolu punched Diaw in the head after Brown struck him with the bottle. His lawyer said Akinlolu initially believed Brown was under attack, and accepted that his involvement quickly developed into the conduct to which he pleaded guilty.

Judge Baumgartner said the prison sentences were the shortest he considered appropriate for the offences. He said the law required him to suspend sentences of 12 months or less unless an exception applied.
Brown will remain free rather than serve his sentence in prison unless he commits another offence during the 12-month suspension period.
