The New Jersey Devils have acquired goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, adding a three-time winner of the National Hockey League’s Vezina Trophy for best goaltender. Both teams announced the completed trade on Friday, October 23, ESPN reported.
The deal ends Hellebuyck’s season-opening holdout. He requested a trade during the summer, saying a move was in the best interest of him and his family. Winnipeg suspended him after he failed to report to training camp, and he forfeited nearly $928,000 by sitting out the start of the season, according to ESPN.
Hellebuyck, 33, also won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player in 2025. He is in the third season of a seven-year contract worth $59.5 million, giving New Jersey a goaltender whose deal extends beyond this season.
Winnipeg receives three forwards and a goaltender, detailed below, plus a seventh-round draft pick in 2027 and a second-round selection in 2029. Draft picks give teams the right to select players entering the league.
| Player | Age | Position | Season or playing status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dawson Mercer | 24 | Forward | Four assists in 10 games for New Jersey this season. |

Florida beat Chicago 3–2, Dallas beat the Islanders 6–3, Montreal beat Winnipeg 2–1 and Minnesota beat Vancouver 4–2, completing Sunday’s five-game NHL scoreboard.
