England beat Sri Lanka by 55 runs at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on 29 October, ending their one-day international cricket tri-series campaign with a consolation victory. Sri Lanka were all out for 331 in 45.1 overs after England made 386–5 from 50 overs. Ben Duckett scored a career-best 167, and Liam Dawson dismissed four batters while conceding 49 runs.
England had lost all three previous matches. Sri Lanka had already qualified for the final against Pakistan, so this result could not change the finalists.
On 22 October in Rawalpindi, Sri Lanka had chased 430 against England to win by two wickets with one ball remaining—the second-highest successful chase in one-day international history.
Sri Lanka finish all out for 331
| Team | Runs and wickets | Overs |
|---|---|---|
| England | 386 for five wickets | 50 |
| Sri Lanka | 331 all out | 45.1 |
An over contains six legal deliveries. The notation 45.1 means Sri Lanka’s innings ended after 45 complete overs and one further legal delivery.
Duckett builds a stadium-record total
Duckett and Tom Banton put on 163 before England lost their first wicket after 25 overs. Banton made 74, giving England a base from which to accelerate. Duckett reached 100 from 89 balls and needed only another 29 deliveries to reach 150.
Duckett’s 167 surpassed his previous one-day international best of 165 against Australia at the same ground during the 2025 Champions Trophy. England’s total was the highest in a one-day international at Gaddafi Stadium.
England take late wickets to end the chase
Captain Kusal Mendis helped Sri Lanka reach 177 for two wickets after 26 overs. England captain Harry Brook brought on Joe Root’s spin bowling, and Mendis edged a catch to wicketkeeper Jordan Cox for 89. Sonny Baker later broke another partnership by having Janith Liyanage caught by Brook for 27.
Pavan Rathnayake kept Sri Lanka in contention. With 10 overs left, they needed 87 runs and had five wickets remaining. Brook recalled Henry Crocombe for the 43rd over, and Sahan Arachchige was caught by Brook for 30. Root and Sam Curran then combined to run out Dunith Wellalage for one. Dawson returned and removed Rathnayake for 118, with Baker catching the ball after it flew off the top edge of the bat.
Sri Lanka lost their last five wickets for 16 runs within three overs, securing England’s first win of the tournament.
Sri Lanka face Pakistan in the final. England travel to Australia in November for three one-day internationals and five Twenty20 matches, a shorter format that limits each side to 20 overs.
