FIFA approved an arrangement to cover president Gianni Infantino’s US taxes, with the total expected to reach about $4 million by the end of his American assignment, The New York Times said on 2 November. The newspaper said the benefit had not been disclosed in FIFA’s annual report.
The arrangement followed Infantino’s move to Miami in 2023. FIFA introduced a rule requiring public disclosure of its top leadership’s compensation after an earlier corruption scandal, the Times said.
Inside World Football, relaying the Times’ reporting on 2 November, described the approximate total as already paid. The Times’ article described it instead as the amount FIFA would have paid by the end of the assignment.
At a meeting alongside the FIFA Congress in Bangkok in May 2024, Bruno Chiomento, the chair of FIFA’s compensation subcommittee, which sets the president’s compensation, proposed offsetting Infantino’s additional US tax burden through 2026. Chiomento is a Swiss accountant and former chair of Ernst & Young’s Swiss unit. Chiomento argued that FIFA had agreed to cover extra taxes for other employees who moved to the United States. The three-member committee approved the proposal, the Times said.
The Times said FIFA would ultimately cover Infantino’s entire US government tax bill and that some senior FIFA officials questioned why he should contribute nothing toward it. The newspaper based its finding about the undisclosed benefit on documents and two people familiar with it.
Infantino, who was elected FIFA president on 26 February 2016, earns about $6 million a year, according to FIFA’s annual report as cited by the Times. FIFA was also paying roughly $600,000 a year to rent his Miami residence.
FIFA told the Times that its internal regulations and processes and all applicable laws had been followed, and that it ensures reporting and taxation requirements are met. It declined to give further details of the arrangement but said payments to senior management were independently audited.
In a separate earlier report, The Times, a different newspaper, incorrectly said Infantino had received an undisclosed “second salary.” It corrected the article and apologized, saying the expenses and reimbursements concerned were not compensation requiring disclosure under Swiss reporting requirements.
UEFA, European football’s governing body, has separately questioned Chiomento’s independence as chair of FIFA’s electoral committee. Citing its understanding that he had known Infantino for approximately 20 years and received FIFA-funded invitations and World Cup hospitality, UEFA asked FIFA to explain how it assessed potential conflicts and to consider replacing him for the presidential election.
