National Bank of Georgia council member Nana Kainishvili has submitted her resignation to Parliament while prosecutors investigate her suspected involvement in illegal business activity, JAMnews said. Kainishvili denies the allegations.
Bank president Natia Turnava said the bank had referred the matter to prosecutors in a timely manner. She said it had excluded Kainishvili from council meetings before the resignation submission to avoid additional questions while the matter was clarified.
In an October 28 account, Interpressnews quoted Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office as saying the investigation began after the bank forwarded complaints from Bitexchange LLC’s management. Prosecutors said audio recordings accompanied the complaints.
The complaints allege that Kainishvili directly controlled a network of enterprises regulated by the National Bank, with ownership stakes registered to a family member and people affiliated with her. Prosecutors said the same complaints alleged that she tried to acquire a stake in another bank-regulated enterprise.
Prosecutors said the investigation was opened under Criminal Code Article 337, which concerns unlawful participation in business activity by an official or a person with equivalent status.
Turnava said the bank had reviewed documents internally as far as its authority allowed. She said legislation did not authorize bank staff to conduct such an investigation involving a council member.

The government plans to introduce the allowance on 6 April 2027 through Finance Bill legislation, while limiting heat-pump funding growth to inflation instead of the earlier planned increase.
Parliamentary speaker Shalva Papuashvili said her letter was registered on October 28 and she would be considered resigned from December 29, 2026. Until then, the bank says she will not attend council meetings during the investigation.
