Germany recorded a combined 5,707 initial asylum applications and new arrivals in the asylum process in October 2026. The total was 40% lower than in October 2025 and the lowest for October since 2011, Interior Ministry figures show.
Bild obtained the ministry figures, which DW cited in its November 4 roundup. Bild quoted Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt as saying Germany was successfully curbing illegal migration.
A separate border count
Germany’s Federal Police recorded 40,193 unauthorized entries at land, air and sea borders in the first ten months of 2026, about 24% fewer than in the same period of 2025. That count measures border entries, not the combined asylum applications and arrivals figure.
The government began what it called a “migration turnaround” when it took office in May 2025. Dobrindt ordered stricter controls at borders with neighboring countries and the return of migrants.
