Haiti’s electoral council delays national vote to July 18, 2027
The council moved presidential and parliamentary first-round voting from December 13, 2026, and scheduled a second round and local polls for October 4, 2027.

Haiti’s nine-member Provisional Electoral Council, which organises elections, on October 28, 2026, postponed first-round presidential and parliamentary voting from December 13, 2026, to July 18, 2027, Al Jazeera said. The council also scheduled a second round and local elections for October 4, 2027.
Haiti has held no elections since 2016. Its last president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated in 2021, and successive transitional authorities have delayed a return to voting, citing insecurity.
Registration barriers and the council’s explanation
The Miami Herald, cited by Al Jazeera, said fewer than 900,000 people had registered by October 28, out of 6.5 million Haitians holding the identification cards needed to enrol. Gang-controlled roads make registration centres difficult to reach, while violence has forced many people from their homes.
The electoral council has introduced online voter registration and extended deadlines for candidates to register.
In its October 28 statement, the council said the revised calendar followed an October 6 electoral decree and consultations with security forces, political and civil-society representatives, business representatives and the government. It said the aim was to allow election work to continue under conditions that let participants meet their legal obligations.
Interim rule and security efforts
Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council dissolved when its mandate expired on February 7, 2026, without a presidential election having taken place. It transferred its remaining powers to Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, leaving him as the country’s sole executive authority.
Foreign troops have served in Haiti under United Nations-backed security arrangements since 2024, partly to create safer conditions for elections. El Salvador has sent troops to help find four Salvadoran aviation technicians who disappeared after an ambush on October 18 while serving with an international security mission.
