Britain’s Mika Stojsavljevic said she had only an hour’s notice before her first WTA Tour main-draw victory, which sends her into the second round.

Mika Stojsavljevic beat Sofia Kenin 6–3, 4–6, 6–4 in the Hong Kong Open first round, earning her first WTA Tour main-draw win and eliminating the former Australian Open champion.
The 17-year-old Briton had lost in qualifying but entered the main draw as a lucky loser, a player given a place after losing in qualifying. She said she learned only an hour before the match that she would play.
Stojsavljevic was ranked world No. 411, while Kenin, 27, was 224 places higher. The American won the Australian Open in 2020.
Stojsavljevic won a close final set after Kenin took the second. Stojsavljevic hit 6 winners to Kenin’s 0 and saved 3 of the 8 break points she faced, BBC Tennis said. A winner is a shot the opponent cannot return; a break point gives the receiving player a chance to win the server’s game.
I kind of just went out and swung today. I know she’s a Grand Slam champion and it was never going to be an easy match, but I believed in myself and it worked out.
The result was Stojsavljevic’s first main-draw win on the WTA Tour, but she had already beaten then-world No. 56 Talia Gibson in Billie Jean King Cup qualifying in April. Earlier this year, she also reached the quarterfinals of the Birmingham WTA 125 event, a tier below the main tour.
Stojsavljevic won the US Open junior title in 2024, becoming the first Briton in 15 years to do so. She reached a high of fifth in the junior world rankings and turned professional in 2025. Her stated second-round opponent in Hong Kong is world No. 67 Zeynep Sönmez of Turkey.

The reported cancellation covers the 2028 and 2032 finals and Qatar Airways’ sponsorship of four editions. France and Spain have expressed informal interest in 2028, with a hosting tender planned for the start of 2027.
