Indonesia’s military has deployed more than 20,000 troops and personnel to Jakarta since Monday, navy operations assistant Vice Admiral Yayan Sofiyan said. The count had surpassed that figure by Wednesday.
Armed forces spokesperson Major General Muhammad Nas said the movement was standard procedure for maintaining national security. Authorities have not officially confirmed a connection between the deployment and a separate investigation into alleged wiretapping targeting President Prabowo Subianto.
Wiretapping investigation
DW said authorities had detained 3 senior police generals accused of illegally tapping the phones of the president, journalists, politicians and businesspeople. They include Listyo Sigit Prabowo, a former national police chief who became the president’s chief of staff last month.
Indonesia’s senior minister for legal affairs said the government had yet to determine the motive for the alleged wiretapping. The suspects had not responded publicly to the allegations.
