Apple directs iPhone Duo owners with display problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement. The company says an issue affects the inner display on a small number of units. Apple’s statement was quoted by 9to5Mac in its 26 October account; its description of the scale is not a measured failure rate.
After the foldable phone’s 23 October launch, some owners said its inner screen cracked on its own, including during initial setup. In its 25 October account, 9to5Mac identified about ten distinct reports describing a crack along the hinge’s centre line and a horizontal band of pixels stuck glowing white. A defective hinge component was a working theory, not a confirmed cause.
Apple says the problem appears relatively quickly and affects a very small number of units. It directs owners with iPhone Duo display issues to AppleCare for a replacement, including those who did not buy their phone at an Apple Store.
In a teardown described in 9to5Mac’s 25 October account, iFixit used CT scans, disassembly footage and Apple’s patents to model the hinge. CT scans show structures inside the phone. The repair group said many reported failures appear near the opening for the cable between the phone’s halves and the central hinge support. Owners had also described hearing a crunch while folding or unfolding the phone, followed by bright lines on the inner display.
iFixit identified two possible ways the hinge could press on the screen: a central support bar might fail to retract as the phone closes, or curved rails that guide the hinge might not move as intended. Several structural edges also meet near the reported damage and could concentrate pressure on the display’s layers. The teardown did not establish that any of these mechanisms caused the failures.

Apple’s $1,999 foldable was released on 23 October with limited availability and apps adapted to its folding screen.

Before Apple gave its direction to contact AppleCare, most affected buyers whose experiences appeared in the initial account had obtained a direct replacement at an Apple Store. Buyers who purchased through mobile carriers could face delays because the carriers lacked stock for an immediate exchange. One owner said they were told they must have dropped the phone and would have to pay for a repair.
iFixit also found features that make the phone easier to take apart: the inner screen’s surround has removable clips, the outer display comes off readily for repairs beneath it, and both batteries use adhesive that releases electrically rather than requiring forceful prying.
The group gave the iPhone Duo a provisional repairability score of 5/10, its highest for a foldable smartphone. That score depends on replacement parts becoming available. For owners experiencing a display problem now, Apple’s stated next step is to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone opened for pre-orders on October 16. On October 16, 9to5Mac reported January 25, 2027 shipping estimates for every configuration, with the earliest orders scheduled to arrive on October 23.
