Renewed attacks, assassinations and armed clashes have hit southeastern Iran as violence has also risen across the border in Pakistan, DW reported on October 22. Strategically important transport links between the countries are coming under growing pressure, the report says.
The violence comes in a region where a separatist movement has operated in Pakistan for years. The border area is home to the Baloch ethnic minority, and communities on both sides are among the wider region’s most economically disadvantaged, according to DW.
In Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan province, recent incidents occurred in the provincial capital, Zahedan, and smaller border towns. DW listed members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the Basij militia, armed individuals and a Sunni cleric among the victims of recent clashes.
The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies recorded an increase in armed attacks in Pakistan’s Balochistan province between August and September, according to DW.

Whether armed groups in southeastern Iran receive foreign support remains unknown, as does whether security gaps caused by the Iran war explain the recent rise in violence there.
In Pakistan, the Pakistani Taliban are expanding their operations alongside the longstanding separatist movement, DW reports. The report links those developments to growing pressure on strategically important transport connections between Iran and Pakistan.
