Almost all truck blockades in southern Italy have been lifted after days of food and fuel shortages, France 24 with AFP reported on 24 October. The reopening allows goods vehicles to use the affected routes again.
The protests began in mid-October, following strikes and sit-ins by farmers and fishers. Drivers blocked roads and slowed traffic across Italy, particularly in the south. Fortune’s 22 October report described their dispute as a protest over high diesel costs.
The lifting of almost all blockades reopens freight routes; it does not mean that food and fuel supplies have already recovered or that stopped production has restarted.
Industry associations representing Naples and other parts of Campania and Puglia had said production stopped because supplies were unavailable, the Guardian reported on 22 October. Their joint statement called for the strike to end and warned that continued disruption would make the damage to consumers and businesses unsustainable.
The Guardian’s 22 October report described photographs of entire supermarket aisles stripped of goods and said stocks at some chains had fallen to 50% of normal levels. Italy’s air traffic management agency, ENAV, said on 21 October that Crotone and Reggio Calabria airports had run out of jet fuel because of supply disruptions.
Estimates gathered by Confcommercio Sicilia put Sicily’s losses from five days of freight disruption at €40–50 million, affecting supermarkets and the wider fresh-food supply chain.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi warned of possible infiltration by criminal groups. Separately, industry associations’ warnings that businesses in Campania and Puglia were on the brink of collapse prompted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to convene an emergency cabinet meeting.
Fortune and France 24 reported halted buffalo mozzarella production on 22 October. The blockade disrupted both sides of the delivery chain in the Naples region: milk could not reach dairies, and finished cheese could not reach customers.
Production rules require buffalo milk to become mozzarella within 60 hours. Buffaloes still need milking when dairies are closed, but farmers typically have storage only until collection trucks arrive, not enough to hold large quantities for long periods.
About one million litres of buffalo milk produced on 21 October could not be turned into mozzarella because of the blockade, said Pier Maria Saccani, director of the Consortium for the Protection of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP. The consortium oversees production standards and protects the cheese’s designation of origin, which links its name to where it is made.
Dairies cannot afford to stockpile highly perishable mozzarella when trucks cannot deliver it. Several dairies remained closed, Saccani said in the 22 October report. Some farmers had fed unused milk to their animals, while the disruption also threatened deliveries of animal feed and diesel needed to keep farms operating.
With almost all blockades lifted, reopened routes make it possible to collect fresh milk, deliver farm supplies and take finished cheese to customers again.
