John Lewis Partnership announced on October 21 that it had signed its first company-wide union recognition agreement, with shopworkers’ union Usdaw. The agreement establishes recognition across the staff-owned retailer, whose businesses include Waitrose and department stores.
Usdaw already has members working in the business. Its general secretary, Joanne Thomas, said the agreement would strengthen the union’s presence and help it support and represent members across the partnership.
The Guardian reported that the agreement comes ahead of new rights for unions to access workplaces, due to take effect at the end of October.
The practical arrangements still need to be finalised. Thomas said Usdaw looked forward to working with the partnership’s management on those details, while seeking to grow its membership and influence within the business.
