South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI closed 6.63% higher on October 28, 2026. SK Hynix, a South Korean company and one of the world’s top three memory-chip makers, gained 10.89% after announcing preliminary third-quarter results.
The KOSPI’s two-day advance through October 28 totalled 9.9%. Even after that recovery, the index remained about 36% below its June intraday peak.
Analysis
Foreign investors and institutions bought South Korean shares during the session, while individual investors were net sellers.
Revenue rose 32% and operating profit 38% from the previous quarter. SK Hynix plans at least 40 trillion won in capacity spending for 2026.

Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell in London, told Al Jazeera that gains across SI-related stocks suggested investors remained interested in the technology. He described these shares as a gauge of market mood: they tend to fall when investors doubt the momentum around SI and rise when enthusiasm strengthens.
Coatsworth said it remained unclear whether the gains marked the start of a new SI-stock rally or a short recovery after investors had questioned how long the upward momentum could last.
Investors are awaiting major technology companies’ earnings to assess whether their large investments in SI are paying off. The scheduled reports begin on October 28. Samsung Electronics is also due to publish full third-quarter results on October 29, providing another checkpoint for the memory-chip industry.
