Eli Lilly said its experimental drug retatrutide reduced blood sugar and body weight more than Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic in a direct comparison in people with diabetes. STAT described the company’s announcement on 28 October. The analyses included only participants who stayed on treatment, not everyone enrolled.
Lilly gave the following results after 80 weeks for the highest retatrutide dose and for Ozempic:

A1c is a blood test that reflects average blood sugar over approximately three months. Its reduction is expressed here in percentage points—the change in the test’s percentage reading. Weight loss instead describes the percentage of starting body weight lost.
Retatrutide activates three hormone receptors, proteins that receive signals in cells: GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. That combination explains the “triple-G” nickname. Ozempic acts on the GLP-1 receptor.
In general, participants who discontinue treatment may differ from those who remain, so excluding them can bias a comparison. Intention-to-treat analysis instead considers participants according to their original treatment assignment, regardless of whether they complete treatment.
The review warns that reversing nature loss and meeting 23 targets by 2030 require rapidly accelerated action. Countries also agreed a voluntary route for additional donors to signal interest before COP18, while leaving the form of a post-2030 financial mechanism for that conference in 2028.
