UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, has sent an emergency team to the region as people flee fighting in southern Ethiopia. On October 28, the agency said local authorities estimated up to 50,000 people had crossed into Kenya, compared with 36,000 recorded by UNHCR on Tuesday, October 27.
The displacement follows clashes between the armies of Ethiopia’s Somali and Oromia regions. Unrest began on October 20 after a Somali regional flag was raised in Moyale, a city jointly administered by the two regions, AFP said in its report carried by France 24.
Fatima Mohammed-Cole, UNHCR’s representative for Kenya, said many of those fleeing were women and children. Some were staying with relatives and host communities, while others had sought temporary shelter in schools and churches.
Mohammed-Cole warned that the estimate could change quickly because fresh crossings were still being recorded.
UNHCR has sent an emergency team to the region. The agency is working with Kenya’s government and humanitarian organizations, including the Red Cross, to provide aid to displaced people.
