Hundreds of Ethiopians, mostly women and children, have crossed into Kenya to escape fighting in the border town of Moyale, Kenyan police said on October 22, according to Al Jazeera. Police reported arrivals through several crossing points, along with gunfire and chaotic scenes in the town.
Police said those crossing were fleeing tensions between the leaders of Ethiopia’s Oromia and Somali regional states. Al Jazeera reported fighting between forces from the two regions.
Ethiopian media cited by Al Jazeera reported that the fighting began with a dispute on Sunday over raising the flag of the Somali Regional State, a region in eastern Ethiopia.
The Kenya Red Cross said it was setting up temporary shelter and distributing essential supplies, including cereal and porridge flour. In its October 22 statement, the organisation said its response would initially reach 1,000 households. That figure is an assistance target, not a verified count of people displaced.
The organisation said experts were assessing how many people were affected and what they needed.
