New York overturns a 15-point deficit to hand Detroit its first defeat. Portland beats the Lakers 136–129 to reach 3–0; Boston beats Brooklyn 125–124 in overtime and San Antonio beats Sacramento 130–103 to reach 2–2, leaving Brooklyn and Sacramento at 0–4.
The New York Knicks earned their first win of the NBA basketball season, beating the conference-leading Detroit Pistons 111–97 at Madison Square Garden in the 28 October results. Portland’s win over the Lakers included a season-high 23 points from Ja Morant and three late technical fouls for flopping, one of which Morant said he planned to appeal.
The defending champion Knicks had lost their first three games. Detroit had won all three regular-season meetings between the teams last season by an average of 30 points. New York overturned an early 15-point deficit by outscoring Detroit 63–25 across the second and third quarters.
The games were played on 27 October and completed on 28 October in Yerevan.
In ESPN’s account, Morant said he would try to appeal his technical foul. He said he had shown his hands and taken a bump to his chest, then moved backwards rather than fallen.
The teams attempted 71 free throws combined. Officials assessed technical fouls for flopping—exaggerating contact—to Portland’s Morant and Toumani Camara and the Lakers’ Ziaire Williams in the final six minutes. Morant’s call came in the final four minutes with Portland leading 121–120.
