The US National Science Foundation (NSF) ended fiscal 2026 on 30 September with about $1.4 billion unspent, leading to its lowest number of new research grants in decades, Nature said on 29 October.
President Donald Trump’s administration had requested cuts of more than 50% to the agency’s budget for each of fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027. Lawmakers from both parties in the US Congress, which sets the federal budget, had resisted those proposals. The unspent balance therefore reflects approved money that was not spent, rather than those proposed cuts taking effect.

Divers organized by Peru’s Ministry of Culture also found submerged settlement walls and objects attributed to the Inca, adding evidence of the coastal settlement’s layout.
Congress’s temporary funding legislation blocks a White House plan that would put political appointees in charge of federal grant review and let them override decisions by scientists who assess research proposals.
The White House Office of Management and Budget said it created the plan to improve transparency, accountability and oversight of federal funds.
The temporary law funds the government only through 11 December 2026. The full fiscal 2027 budget still awaits final approval.
