Perseverance photographed Tinga on October 14 while driving along the southern border of Idubi. The rover had been investigating this outcrop—an exposed body of rock—which NASA describes as composed mainly of the mineral olivine.
NASA identifies the lowermost rock unit as likely polymict breccia: rock containing angular fragments of several different rock types. That interpretation describes the rock’s texture and contents, not a confirmed explanation of how it formed.
Breccia can form through violent geological processes such as impacts. The mission team proposes that Tinga’s possible breccia may have formed in an impact similar to the one that created Jezero crater, or in the Jezero-forming impact itself.
The higher-standing dark rocks have two possible explanations in NASA’s account. They could belong to Idubi’s olivine-bearing rock unit, which appears to extend onto the plains beyond Jezero’s rim. Alternatively, they could be breccia that was heated when it came into contact with hot Idubi rocks.
NASA says further investigation at the outcrop is needed to determine how the higher-standing rocks relate to the broader rock unit. That closer examination is the next step needed to distinguish the possible relationships seen in the image.
The NIH–NASA competition seeks better measurements in laboratory drug-safety models, with submissions scheduled to open on 15 December 2026.
