Leicester Tigers beat Bristol Bears 22–16 at Ashton Gate on 30 October 2026, scoring 4 tries by grounding the ball in the opponent’s scoring area to move above Gloucester and provisionally lead rugby union’s Gallagher PREM. The rest of the weekend’s matches remained outstanding.
Both teams entered the match with 3 league wins apiece before the autumn international break. Leicester’s extra league point for their try tally made this a maximum-points victory; Bristol also took a point from the defeat.
Leicester exploit Bristol’s yellow cards
Louis Rees-Zammit gave Bristol the lead in the 6th minute, beating 2 defenders from about 35 meters out to score under the posts. It was his 5th PREM try of the season. Leicester answered after winning possession and counterattacking: Billy Searle kicked across the field for Freddie Steward to score in the corner on his 100th PREM start.
Bristol then lost Matias Moroni and Tom Jordan to yellow cards for high tackles in the 31st and 34th minutes respectively. Their overlapping temporary dismissals left Bristol with 13 players. Adam Radwan chased Searle’s long kick and touched down to help Leicester lead 12–7 at halftime.
Another Searle cross-field kick found Ollie Hassell-Collins in space 90 seconds after the restart. His try made it 17–7, completing a spell in which Leicester scored 10 points while Bristol’s yellow-carded players were off the field.
James Williams’s opening penalties brought Bristol within 4 points, but Jamie Blamire crossed at the back of a driving group of forwards following a lineout throw-in. That try secured Leicester’s scoring bonus.
Searle missed 3 conversions—the kicks taken after tries—which kept Bristol in contention. Williams finished with a conversion and 3 penalties, the last with 7 minutes remaining, leaving Bristol within 6 points and in losing-bonus range. Leicester held on despite Searle hitting a post with a last-minute penalty.
| Team | Points earned | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Leicester | 4 for winning, plus 1 for scoring at least 4 tries | 5 |
| Bristol | Losing bonus for a defeat by no more than 7 points | 1 |
Coaches point to missed chances
In comments carried by BBC Sport, Leicester head coach Geoff Parling described a gritty win at a difficult venue, but said his team could have settled the result earlier.
Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam said his team failed to build enough pressure through scoring and lineouts. He said conceding tries while short-handed made the task harder, while praising his players' effort.
Remaining fixtures can change the lead
Gloucester are scheduled to visit Northampton on 31 October 2026, at 17:30 GMT [21:30 Yerevan time], leaving Leicester’s lead provisional. Exeter host Harlequins, Saracens host Newcastle Red Bulls, and Bath host Sale Sharks the same day.
After the autumn international break, Bristol are scheduled to visit Bath on 4 December 2026. Leicester’s next PREM match is scheduled away to Harlequins on 5 December 2026.
