Reddit plans to test the change outside the US this quarter. Proposed exceptions would keep the homepage and content reached through search engines or shared links open without login.

Reddit announced plans on October 29, 2026 to require a logged-in account for most content, Axios said in a report relayed by 9to5Mac. The change is planned for testing, rather than already imposed worldwide.
Reddit began requiring login for Old Reddit, its older website interface, in July 2026, Ars Technica said. The October plan would extend account requirements to browsing more broadly.
The reported exceptions would leave Reddit’s homepage accessible without login and let visitors read content reached through search engines or shared links. 9to5Mac interpreted the plan as apparently requiring login for direct visits to individual subreddits—Reddit’s communities—and other browsing outside those exceptions.
Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged that the details of access without an account were still being finalized. The proposed exceptions therefore remain provisional.
Huffman told Axios that Reddit wanted to improve the user experience, strengthen its advertising business and stop automated programs from collecting its proprietary data.
On 30 September 2026, Reddit announced further planned limits for Old Reddit over the following months. Access would be restricted to logged-in users who had used Old Reddit within the previous 6 months, with an exception for logged-in moderators.
In that September announcement, Reddit also said support for RSS feeds, which deliver updates to feed-reader apps, would end on 13 November 2026. It cited large-scale automated data collection and abuse, and said moderators would have supported alternatives for their workflows.
For the broader browsing change announced in October, Reddit plans to begin tests outside the US this quarter, followed by a wider worldwide rollout. If the plan proceeds as described, direct browsing could require login while the proposed homepage, search and shared-link exceptions preserve access without an account.
