England kept their Rugby League World Cup semi-final hopes alive by beating France in Perth on 24 October, but did not secure qualification. BBC Sport and the Guardian report different scores for Samoa’s win over Papua New Guinea, affecting the points-difference calculations for England’s route to the last four.
England had lost their opening match 30–12 to Tonga on 17 October. Against France, England scored 14 tries, including three each for Herbie Farnworth and Dom Young. Farnworth completed his three before half-time.
BBC Sport reports Samoa’s victory over Papua New Guinea as 62–6, while the Guardian reports 64–6. The two-point disagreement matters because points difference—the points a team scores minus those it concedes—could decide whether England or Samoa reaches the semi-finals.

| Samoa | Papua New Guinea | 62–6 |

BBC Sport put England’s deficit to Samoa before the France match at 150 points. It said points difference would decide between England and Samoa if England beat Papua New Guinea and Tonga beat Samoa.
| Team | Points difference |
|---|---|
| Samoa | +132 |
| England | +64 |
The Guardian’s totals include Samoa’s previous 78–4 win over France and leave England 68 points behind Samoa. That gap, and the qualification margins calculated from it, depend on the Guardian’s figures given the conflicting Samoa score.
Using its totals, the Guardian says an England win by 68 points over Papua New Guinea would make any Tonga victory over Samoa enough for England to qualify. A smaller England winning margin would require Tonga to make up the rest with its own winning margin. If Samoa beat Tonga, England are eliminated, the Guardian reports.
England next face Papua New Guinea in Wollongong on 30 October. BBC Sport says England need another heavy win there, followed by a Tonga victory over Samoa on 1 November, to reach the semi-finals.

Sione Katoa and Jojo Fifita scored twice each as Tonga followed its win over England with a second victory, strengthening its semi-final bid.
