Warrap Governor Angelo Ngot Mayar has ordered security agencies to evacuate people wounded in Monday’s cattle raids in northern South Sudan. State authorities said at least 72 people were killed, BBC reported.
The raids took place in Akop Payam, in Tonj North county, near the border between Warrap and Unity states. Warrap Information Minister William Wol Mayom Bol said they followed violence the preceding Friday that killed eight people.
State authorities described Monday’s raids as a coordinated attack in which an unspecified number of cattle were stolen and homes were burnt. In their account, some members of the Lou Ariik community attacked members of the Apuk Padoch community.
Cattle are a major source of wealth for many communities in South Sudan. Young men also need them as dowries to marry, giving the animals an important role in family life as well as household wealth.
The state appealed to humanitarian partners to provide food, shelter and medicine for vulnerable women, children and elderly people left without those necessities.
Mayar said efforts were under way to recover the stolen cattle and find those behind the assault.
