STAN’s angel investors say they have invested in HarborSite, a US biotechnology company co-founded and led by Armenian Eric Aznauryan. The company has joined STAN’s investment portfolio, How2B said. The investment amount, ownership stake and terms are undisclosed.
HarborSite emerged from George Church’s laboratory. Earlier work at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University focused on refining the technology: in its March 18, 2024 account, the institute said the team was working toward forming a startup and eventually reaching clinical use.
HarborSite describes an approach that inserts disease-modifying genes into genetic material to develop treatments for inherited and age-related diseases. Its goal is a treatment whose effects last for life after a single administration.
The Wyss Institute’s March 18, 2024 account described a design using recombinases—enzymes that insert DNA—to place large DNA sequences at selected locations in the genome, a cell’s genetic material. The aim was to make therapeutic genes work predictably, safely and for the long term. At that time, the team was focusing on diseases potentially treatable by inserting genes into liver cells, including hemophilia.
Wyss described Erik Aznauryan’s research role as finding suitable insertion locations and evaluating how safely and efficiently insertions worked in different cell types.
Wyss selected HarborSite as a 2022–2023 Validation Project and renewed it for 2023–2024. That program provided dedicated funding, business-development support and other resources to refine the technology.
