At least four people have died and one has been injured in France after Storm Adam brought widespread flooding to the south on Tuesday, the BBC reported on Thursday. Floodwaters inundated streets, sent dozens of residents into emergency shelters and disrupted transport.
The storm had already caused severe flooding in eastern Spain, where at least three people were killed. Several towns along Spain’s Mediterranean coast were cut off, and helicopters were deployed to rescue people stranded on rooftops.
Two women, aged 86 and 26, were found drowned in a cellar in Bouches-du-Rhône, the BBC reported. In Corsica, local media reported that floodwaters swept away a 4x4 vehicle on Tuesday. One occupant escaped through a window, but another man was found dead. Authorities have not released further details about the fourth death.
Dozens of residents in Mouriès and Saint-Martin-de-Crau, between Montpellier and Marseille, were accommodated in emergency shelters. Officials said one person was injured in that area.
France’s transport minister, Philippe Tabarot, said roads and railway lines in the area were disrupted. In a statement on Wednesday, Bouches-du-Rhône prefect Jacques Witkowski described the water levels as unprecedented and said authorities were mobilised at an exceptional level.
A separate weather system, Storm Austen, is approaching from the Atlantic and is forecast to reach north-western France. The wind warning associated with its approach is distinct from the flooding caused by Storm Adam in the south.
