Police say the teenager faces 11 attempted second-degree murder charges after 11 people were shot and another injured an ankle while fleeing. Police say further arrests are possible.
Tallahassee police have arrested a 15-year-old in connection with the shooting that injured 12 people near Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. The teenager has been charged with 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent, police said, as the BBC reported on 26 October. The charges are allegations, not findings of guilt.
The shooting happened on Perry Street near the university’s campus on 24 October, the university said, as The Guardian reported. Police placed it at an intersection near the university’s Bragg stadium just before 8pm, after a homecoming American football game had ended.
Police’s preliminary account is that an altercation between people who knew each other preceded the gunfire. None of the victims appear to have been the intended targets, police said.
At his briefing on 25 October, police chief Lawrence Revell said the initial assessment was that one shooter was involved and that the incident involved two or three people. Investigators were still determining exactly what happened and why.
Police said 11 people suffered gunshot wounds and another injured an ankle while fleeing. Six of those injured were adults and six were juveniles. Revell said the youngest victim was 11.
Police’s initial statement listed at least three victims with serious injuries and nine in stable condition. By the morning of 25 October, five victims had left hospital. Police said that day that six remained in hospital, including one in critical condition.
The department’s violent crimes unit is investigating. Revell appealed for anyone with information to contact police at 850-891-4200 or the tips line at 850-574-TIPS. Police said additional arrests were possible.
