UK government proposes lifetime pension income option
The government estimates its guided-retirement proposals would affect 17 million workers saving into pensions, while leaving savers free to withdraw their money or invest it elsewhere.

The UK government outlined proposals on 3 November for a default retirement option designed to provide private-sector pension savers with an income for life. The government estimates the changes would affect 17 million workers investing in pensions. The proposed option is not a guarantee already available to every saver.
Most pension schemes that offered a set lifetime payout based on a worker’s final salary have closed over the past 30 years. Many workers instead reach retirement with a pot of savings and must decide how to use it, The Guardian said. Some struggle with that decision and risk outliving their savings and relying on the state pension.
Savers would keep withdrawal choices
Under the proposals, savers could still withdraw their money or invest it elsewhere rather than take the default option. Payments under the proposed option would often be linked to inflation, which means they could rise with prices.
The government says nearly half of pension pots accessed for the first time in 2025-26 were emptied. Its proposals would give savers an alternative designed to provide an income throughout retirement.
