US gasoline prices exceeded $4.27 a gallon on 22 October, according to the American Automobile Association, as diesel reached record highs. Fortune put the 26 October national averages at $4.29 a gallon for regular gasoline and $6.35 for diesel, both substantially above their pre-war levels.
| Fuel | Earlier price | 26 October |
|---|---|---|
| Regular gasoline | $2.98 before the war | $4.29 |
| Diesel | $3.76 in February | $6.35 |
Fortune did not identify who compiled the 26 October averages. The publication said diesel passed $6 a gallon in September, setting a record, and reached a high of nearly $6.53 that month.

Drivers pay more directly at gasoline pumps. Diesel powers heavy machinery and the heavy trucks that carry consumer goods across the country, so higher diesel prices also raise freight operators’ fuel bills. Higher energy and transport costs have fed into the wider economy, contributing to inflation.
US President Donald Trump has defended higher fuel costs as a price worth paying for a war he describes as necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, Fortune said. Al Jazeera said on 23 October that Trump had suggested he might renew all-out fighting with Iran after the midterm elections. The elections are scheduled for 3 November, with household living costs among voters’ leading concerns.
Before the war, however, Trump had repeatedly said the June 2025 US strikes had destroyed Iran’s nuclear programme. US intelligence officials testified to Congress that they had no evidence Iran was building a nuclear bomb.
