The US president signed H.R. 1744 into law on 3 November 2026, extending the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom through fiscal 2028, the White House said. The law also authorizes annual appropriations, meaning funding provided through the budget process, for the commission through that period.
The commission’s role
Created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, the federal commission examines religious freedom violations abroad and recommends policies to the president, secretary of state and US Congress. The extension continues authorization for a body that evaluates those violations and advises US policymakers.
The White House’s announcement specifies neither appropriation amounts nor operational changes. Its funding provision authorizes annual appropriations through fiscal 2028; it does not announce actual funding allocations.
