CEO Daniel Schulman plans 1 Gbps millimeter-wave coverage in US metro areas alongside Verizon’s fiber build. He says scaling will begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and continue through 2027 and beyond.
Verizon aims to make broadband at 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) available by fixed wireless to 10–15 million additional premises in US metro areas. CEO Daniel Schulman set out the target on the company’s third-quarter earnings call, in remarks covered by RCR Wireless. The figure counts premises Verizon aims to reach, not connected customers or locations already receiving the service.
The wireless target sits on top of Verizon’s separate plan for a fiber footprint covering 40–50 million premises. Schulman said the company had developed the millimeter-wave wireless service to complement that build.
Fixed wireless access connects a building by radio rather than running a cable all the way to it. Fiber-to-the-premises runs optical cable to the home or building.
Millimeter waves are high-frequency radio waves named for wavelengths of roughly 1–10 millimeters. They are conventionally placed in the 30–300 GHz range, though some definitions start at 24 GHz. Their shorter reach than lower-frequency waves lets the same frequencies be reused over shorter distances.
Schulman said Verizon’s 1,700 MHz of millimeter-wave spectrum gives it a competitive advantage. He also expects its use to add efficiency and capacity to Verizon’s existing C-band spectrum, another part of its wireless network.
Schulman said Verizon began changing how it sells fixed wireless in the third quarter of 2026. He said it would not sell the service to customer groups whose expected speeds it cannot deliver, putting that consideration ahead of targets for adding subscribers.
Schulman said Verizon would begin scaling the high-speed service in the fourth quarter of 2026 and continue through 2027 and beyond. The plan gives no firm completion date, market-by-market schedule, address-level eligibility or pricing, so the coverage target does not yet tell a prospective customer whether a particular premises will qualify.
The satellite operator expects access to more than twice OneWeb’s current bandwidth in return for spending in 2027–2034, with initial IRIS² services expected from 2030.
