Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany left hospital on October 28 and is doing well “given the circumstances”, the club’s sporting board member Max Eberl told broadcaster ARD in comments carried by the BBC.
The cause of the collapse was meningeal irritation— inflammation of the protective membrane around the brain and spinal cord. Kompany will now rest and take medication.
Kompany, 40, was appointed Bayern’s head coach in May 2024. He collapsed at the club’s training ground on October 23 while watching its second team train and was rushed to hospital.
Kompany had been ill with a virus in the days before his collapse and had missed some training sessions. He also missed the October 20 news conference before Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal, but was on the touchline for the match on October 21.
Bayern said on October 24 that his recovery would take “weeks, not days”. The club has set no return date, although Eberl expressed confidence that Kompany would be back on the touchline “operating at 100% very soon”.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge during Kompany’s absence. Bundesliga leaders Bayern are scheduled to face title rivals Borussia Dortmund on October 31.

Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1–0 a day earlier. The weekend results leave Dortmund and Bayern level on points, with Bayern ahead on goal difference.
