Jonny DeLuca and Ben Williamson drove in runs in the 12th inning to cut Milwaukee’s series lead to 3–1 and force Game 5 on Wednesday night.

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4–3 in 12 innings at Tropicana Field on 27 October, avoiding elimination and cutting Milwaukee’s World Series lead to 3–1. MLB also documented rookie records for Milwaukee’s Cooper Pratt and a record for postseason hits before age 23 for teammate Jackson Chourio.
Milwaukee had won the first three games of the best-of-seven championship series, including a 10–1 victory in Game 3. Tampa Bay had reached the World Series by sweeping the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series, then recovering from a 2–1 deficit to beat the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series.
Major League Baseball said Pratt became the first rookie to hit a home run in extra innings of a World Series game. His 12th-inning homer was the 29th extra-inning home run in World Series history.
Pratt also became the first rookie with four hits in a game that could have clinched the World Series title, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Milwaukee would have secured the championship with a win.
Chourio’s two hits in Game 4 took him past Andruw Jones for the most career postseason hits before turning 23.

Tampa Bay threw 205 pitches to get through Game 4. Six relief pitchers, who entered after the starter left, allowed just one run over eight innings. Nick Martinez and Bryan Baker each contributed two scoreless innings. Regulation lasts nine innings; a tied score sends the game into additional innings.
Milwaukee relief pitcher Aaron Ashby kept Tampa Bay off the bases in the ninth, 10th and part of the 11th innings. He reached a record 18 consecutive scoreless relief innings to start this postseason, passing Andrew Miller’s 2016 mark of 16 innings.
Milwaukee shortstop Pratt hit his home run off Ian Seymour in the first half of the 12th inning, putting the Brewers ahead 3–2 and within three outs of their first World Series title. A home run allows the batter to round the bases and score.
The Rays’ reply began when third baseman Joey Ortiz made a throwing error on Junior Caminero’s ground ball against relief pitcher Antonio Senzatela. Liam Hicks followed with a single off Shane Drohan—a hit that allowed Hicks to reach first base. Jonny DeLuca then singled into center field to drive in the tying run.
Chandler Simpson’s single filled all three bases. Milwaukee used five infielders, positioned closer to home plate, the Associated Press account published by ESPN said.
Ben Williamson, batting as a substitute, entered with only one hit in 15 postseason at-bats. He hit the first pitch he saw over first baseman Jake Bauers and into right field, driving in the winning run. The bouncing single was Williamson’s first World Series hit and second hit of this postseason.
Simpson drove in the opening run with a second-inning double, a hit that took him to second base. Pratt answered with a run-scoring double in the fourth. Caminero then scored on David Hamilton’s throwing error in Tampa Bay’s half of the inning, restoring the Rays’ lead to 2–1. A replay review confirmed Hamilton had missed a tag on Caminero before the throw.
Hamilton’s solo home run in the fifth tied the game at 2–2. Neither team scored again until Pratt’s 12th-inning homer.
Tampa Bay became the first team since the 1910 Chicago Cubs to win a World Series elimination game by walk-off—a winning play that immediately ends the home team’s game—while facing a sweep, MLB said.
Across all best-of-seven postseason series, Tampa Bay was the 11th of 44 teams to force Game 5 after trailing 3–0. In the World Series alone, the Rays were only the fifth of 26 teams to win Game 4 from that position. The previous four all lost Game 5.
The Boston Red Sox remain the only team to overturn a 3–0 deficit and win a best-of-seven postseason series, against the Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series.
Game 5 is scheduled for the night of 28 October at Tropicana Field. Both teams are pursuing their first World Series championship: a Milwaukee win would secure the title, while Tampa Bay must win again to extend the series.

Milwaukee clinched the series 4–1 at Tropicana Field as Jacob Misiorowski pitched 5⅔ scoreless innings, completing the franchise’s first championship season.

MLB’s historical comparisons give no clear answer on whether extra rest helps. Milwaukee can use the layoff to arrange its starting pitchers and refresh its relievers before Friday’s opener.
