World Wrestling Championships, Oct 27: Aslanyan wins gold 8–4

Galstyan finishes fifth

Slavik Galstyan lost his 67 kg bronze-medal bout 6–10 to Cuba’s Luis Orta Sánchez, an Olympic champion, on 27 October. Galstyan finished fifth, leaving Aslanyan and Gevorg Tadevosyan as Armenia’s two medallists.

Aslanyan’s route to gold

Aslanyan won all four bouts before the final before the time limit, conceding no points in the first three.

Mammadli entered the final as a previous world and European champion. He won his European title in 2024 and took silver from this final.

The semifinals that led to Armenia’s bronze bouts

Galstyan and Tadevosyan each won three bouts before losing their 26 October semifinals, putting both into bronze-medal bouts.

Tadevosyan’s first senior international medal

Tadevosyan beat Ukraine’s Yaroslav Filchakov for 87 kg bronze on 27 October. It was his first podium finish at a senior international competition sanctioned by United World Wrestling. He finished the championships with four victories in five bouts.

Armenpress gives Tadevosyan’s winning score as 3–1, while Sportaran and Armsport give 4–1. All three agree that he won bronze.

Armsport said Tadevosyan secured victory through a challenge—a request for video review of a referee’s decision—in the final seconds.

Iran tops the standings; Armenia finishes tenth

Iran finished with four gold medals and led the team standings ahead of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Armenia matched its 2025 tally of two medals, but fell from fifth place with 63 points to tenth with 50.

Sportaran linked Armenia’s lower team result to the elimination of most of its wrestlers in the early rounds.

The 2026 championships do not count towards Olympic qualification. Ranking and qualification tournaments begin in 2027.
