Canva is reducing its global workforce by 1,271 people, or 22%, Crunchbase News said, citing an update on the Australian design company’s website. Canva has workers in Austin and San Francisco, but the number of layoffs affecting US employees is unclear.

Earlier accounts described the total as including job cuts, role changes and relocations. CNA corrected its earlier account to make that distinction; Crunchbase News’s later account describes the total as a workforce reduction.

Growth slowdown and team changes

Co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins told staff that Canva’s growth had slowed for the first time in a decade and that small changes would not be enough. Canva is combining its product, growth and platform teams into one product organization, with the aim of reducing handovers and giving teams greater ownership.

Departing employees will receive at least six months of salary and another 12 months of healthcare coverage in countries where workers receive that benefit.
