OpenAI is rolling out animated GIF creation to all ChatGPT and Codex users on the web and in desktop and mobile apps. In its 4 November 2026 announcement, the company said its Images 2.6 model also brings faster image generation, more precise editing and new controls across ChatGPT, Codex and its API, an interface developers use to connect software to a service. OpenAI identifies GIF creation as an Images 2.6 capability across ChatGPT, Codex and the API.
Users can create a GIF from a text prompt or an uploaded photo, adjust the animation speed and edit individual frames, The Decoder said, citing The Verge. In an OpenAI demonstration, a request for a dancing cat produced slightly different images of a character, assembled into a GIF like a flipbook.
The Decoder assessed that the character appeared recognizable across frames and suggested earlier models would likely have changed its appearance too much for the approach to work.
Options for developers
OpenAI is also releasing GPT-Image-2.6 API models called Flare, for efficient image generation, and Sunburst, for higher-quality images. The two variants were first introduced with Image 2.5.
OpenAI says users generate well over four billion images a week through ChatGPT and the API, one billion more than in September.
