Tampa Bay’s quarterback ended a three-game absence caused by a dislocated right thumb and threw a second-quarter touchdown against Carolina on October 25.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield returned on October 25 after missing three games with a dislocated right thumb, throwing a second-quarter touchdown in a 43–13 win over the Carolina Panthers. He completed seven of 11 passes for 64 yards and one touchdown.
ESPN’s October 4 report projected a three-to-six-week absence and said his availability depended on how quickly he could grip a football.
Mayfield’s limited passing workload came as Tampa Bay gained 258 rushing yards and scored three rushing touchdowns. The Buccaneers scored 22 points from Carolina’s mistakes, including 19 in the first half, which helped Tampa Bay rely on running the ball to close out the win.
The Buccaneers sought help from the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team. Tyler Wall, the Rays’ home clubhouse attendant, modified the receiver’s glove that Mayfield wore during the game. MLB said the glove supported Mayfield’s dislocated thumb as he returned to play after missing the previous three weeks.
Mayfield left the September 27 game with the thumb injury. ESPN’s September 30 roundup named Jalon Daniels, an undrafted rookie who spent six seasons with the Kansas Jayhawks, as his replacement. That put a first-year player in charge of directing the offense and throwing its passes.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan on September 28 showed no additional damage to the thumb ligament or tendon beyond the dislocation, ESPN’s sources said in its October 4 report. Tampa Bay did not place Mayfield on injured reserve on October 3; that list removes injured players from the active roster.
The October 4 report named Daniels as the starter against the Green Bay Packers that day, with Easton Stick as his backup. Tampa Bay’s listed schedule ran from Green Bay through the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers before Carolina.
On October 23, coach Todd Bowles confirmed Mayfield’s planned return after a normal week of practice, but said he would be without wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, his leading target. Egbuka suffered a concussion and a foot injury in the Week 6 loss to Pittsburgh. ESPN said he did not leave that game for a concussion check; symptoms developed after he returned to the team’s building, and he entered the concussion protocol, the assessment process for that injury.
The October 4 schedule listed Tampa Bay hosting the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8 after the Carolina game.

The appeal tribunal removed an additional suspended spectator ban, but each club must still play its next home Scottish Cup tie without fans and pay the visiting side £100,000.
