BioWare had announced on October 21 that it was closing and ending early development on the next Mass Effect project. The announcement confirms that work was still at an early stage when the project ended.
Electronic Arts acquired the Edmonton, Alberta, developer in 2007. BioWare built its reputation with role-playing games including Baldur’s Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and created the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released on October 31, 2024. It reached 1.5 million players across all platforms by December 31 that year, well below Electronic Arts’ expectations.
BioWare has not specified a completion date for the closure or detailed what support affected employees will receive. The studio said its focus was supporting its team through the transition.
