Southampton moved into the Championship playoff places with a 3–2 win at West Ham on 24 October, while Middlesbrough retained the lead in football’s second tier. QPR’s 5–0 victory over Swansea meant both clubs that could have overtaken Middlesbrough lost.
Middlesbrough had gone top by winning 5–1 at Bolton on 23 October. Will Lankshear scored twice to reach 11 league goals, helping Middlesbrough secure a 10th successive victory over Bolton in a run stretching back to 2014. A win for either Swansea or West Ham on 24 October would displace them.
Southampton led 3–1 at half-time. West Ham scored again in the third minute of stoppage time, but Southampton held on to secure their place in the playoff positions.
Richard Kone scored a first-half hat-trick for QPR, and Jimmy Dunne added their fourth before the break. Dunne scored again after a free-kick to complete the five-goal win, denying Swansea the victory they needed to go top.
Lincoln came from behind to beat Burnley 4–1. The teams were level at half-time before Lincoln scored three times after the break.
In the early games on 24 October, Norwich recovered from conceding an early goal to win 3–1 at Charlton, ending a six-match losing streak. Charlton suffered their first home defeat of the season and went a ninth Championship match without a win.
Portsmouth also came from behind, beating Millwall 2–1 through an 82nd-minute winner. Jake Cooper’s attempted clearance struck Thomas Waddingham and rebounded into the net. Portsmouth recorded a third win in four matches, while Millwall were left with six points from seven games.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.
