Ciara Mageean, the European 1500m champion and two-time Olympian, died aged 34 on 1 November 2026, her family announced. Their statement on her Instagram account said she died of cancer at 06:30 local time (10:30 Yerevan time), surrounded by loved ones. The Guardian carried the family’s announcement.
Born in Portaferry, County Down, Northern Ireland, Mageean specialized in the 1500m. Her European victory in Rome in 2024 was the first major title of her career, following bronze and silver at earlier championships.
| Year | Competition | 1500m result |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | European Championships, Amsterdam | Bronze |
| 2022 | Commonwealth Games, Birmingham | Silver for Northern Ireland, behind Laura Muir |
| 2022 | European Championships | Silver, behind Muir |

Carlos Alcaraz wins his 4th title of 2026 and 28th overall, extending his unbeaten record against Alex de Minaur.
In the Rome final, Mageean was boxed in behind Georgia Bell and Jemma Reekie. She found a gap, ran through it and accelerated down the finishing straight to win in 4:04.66.
Her Olympic appearances were both for Ireland. She reached the semifinals in Rio in 2016 and exited in the heats at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021 after a delay. An Achilles injury forced her to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Olympics on the eve of her heat.
Mageean also broke longstanding Irish records. At the 2020 Diamond League meeting in Monaco, she ran 2:31.06 for 1,000m, cutting 3.6 seconds from Sonia O’Sullivan’s 27-year-old record.
Her first Diamond League victory came in Brussels in 2022. She won the 1500m in 3:56.63, an Irish record and her first performance under four minutes. In July 2023, she also lowered O’Sullivan’s Irish mile record by more than two seconds.
