Chelsea’s Cole Palmer to serve ban in Liverpool EFL Cup tie

Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer will serve his one-match suspension in the EFL Cup fourth-round match away at Liverpool on October 28, 2026. BBC Sport said on October 26 that the ban covers the cup tie rather than Chelsea’s next Premier League match.
Palmer received two yellow cards in the second half of Chelsea’s 2–0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. His dismissal brought a one-match ban.
Red-card suspensions apply across domestic competitions, not just the competition in which the player was sent off. Bans for accumulating yellow cards over a season work differently: those must be served in the competition where the cautions were received.
Palmer’s two cautions in one match resulted in a dismissal, so his ban carries over to the cup tie. Serving it against Liverpool leaves him eligible for Chelsea’s league meeting with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on October 31, three days later.

City’s first league defeat opens the way for Arsenal to join them on 21 points, while Liverpool move fourth.
